@Abhijit -- I don't interpret Mary's comment to indicate that she thinks the whole answer is to measure the input side, or that even this would be simple. I hope you don't interpret my comments to say this either. There's nothing…

Yes, and once anything is capitalized it can be "marketized", as a form of property that can be traded, leveraged, etc. Which is where I'm headed with my bloggage on this site (probably obvious).

Hi Mary -- Just the fact that the S in the acronym is "Selling" indicates there is a lot relationship capital in that number, I'd say.

A partnership with Nielsen would indicate that this venture will have a high degree of focus on marketing. I wouldn't expect them to have much focus on social media in the Knowledge Factory, although I did see a very insightful article or book…

IC is the domain of the knowledge worker. The knowledge factory is where they work, creating the assemblages of structural capital, relationship capital, human capital and product that Adams and Oleksak discuss. The knowledge worker is a volunteer, as Ron Baker points out in Mind Over Matter: Why Intellectual Capital is the Chief Source of Wealth ( http://amzn.to/do6Cix ). People voluntarily invest their IC in the companies and institutions where they work.…See More

In my last posting I briefly mentioned the slightly disturbing notion of programming people in the knowledge factory. Let me first explain why that should not really be disturbing.Programming, in this context has a specific word to describe it: memetics. In some ways memetics is another way of saying teachings, which we humans are the leading practitioners on the planet. A meme is a memorable item of culture that is taught, and then performed by others. No need to get into the technicalities of…See More

Doug and Galen- Thanks to both of you. About VNA: yes, we have a great case that I am currently writing up that shows how we used traditional IC perspectives to help a company get an understanding of the strategic alternatives for an…

@Galen -- Great to find a person who can help make these connections. I have a few more things to say about this, but thought I'd lay the groundwork. I think this perspective (IC in general) is the trend for business in the 21st Century, and…

Doug- I appreciate your "connecting" of TOC and KF. I am an avid believer in both concepts, and it is very gratifying to see all the connections that many others are articulating in this emerging field. I believe that the more we can…

What is your interest in IC?
I have been involved in IC one way or another for my whole career. I had responsibility for practice IC at IBM, and expressed many times the need to create a marketplace that allowed IC creators to benefit from their contributions in a tangible way

I’ve just been reading Intangible Capital, by our own Mary Adams and Michael Oleksak. Yes, it’s out and available! In this book they formulate an interesting thought framework that they call the knowledge factory (KF). They visualize the components of this factory as color-coded Lego pieces that represent structural capital,…

HI Doug. . I work with communities of PLACE-- out on the Olympic Peninsula in NW Washington primarily but also nationally-- rural close net communities that have seen a 16% rise in poverty in the last 5 years but have enormous social and ecological capital!.. . as folks panic in the recession I'm doing both --directing the local economic development council to a new vocabulary and directing our local county Extension education program- focusing on the triple bottom line-- thanks for your welcome and note!

Hi, Doug,
I have not experienced much action or benefit from this connection but maybe it will heat up now that you are involved.
I think the IC movement is looking for the keys under the wrong streetlight. More later.

Hi Doug,

I have discovered this forum through the information you provided in Linked-In. So, thanks for the invitation and for the information.

By the way, have you seen the web site in which I have started publishing the work we did? Here is the URI: http://www.itdec.eu/Intangibles_Overview.html
May (should) I mention that you contributed to that work?

Have a nice week end
